Dr Dong-Chun Shin Receives Environmental Health Hero Award
Dr Dong-Chun Shin, professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Director of the Institute for Environmental Research at Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, received the 2017 Environmental Health Hero Award during the CleanMed conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota- United States.
Dr. Shin is a Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Director of the Institute for Environmental Research at Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. He is President of the Korean Society for Green Hospitals and Chair of the Korea Chapter of the Society for Risk Anaysis (SRA), Chair of the Policy Studies Division, Korea National Academy of Science and Technology and a Member of the Environmental Health Committee in the Ministry of Environment in Korea. He is also a Council Member of the World Medical Association and Chair of the Associations’ Environmental Caucus.
Dr. Shin’s research in exposure and risk assessment relating to Persistent Organic Pollutants including dioxins, has resulted in more than 160 peer-reviewed, scholarly articles. His activities with respect to setting environmental policies for the Republic of Korea; his work protecting the public’s health, in particular his role in the creation of the Korea National Environmental Health Action Plan 2006-2015; his outstanding service as Chair of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network; and his seminal advocacy of sustainability in health care and mitigation of climate change are especially noteworthy achievements in a distinguished career protecting public health and promoting crucial environmental health goals.
Dr. Shin’s advocacy for environmental health has had global sway through his work with the World Medical Association, and specifically as a leader in Asia of this much needed scientific movement. In 2016, Dr. Shin published an important book, Hazardous Air Pollutants: Case Studies from Asia, which highlighted the dramatic and growing problem of air pollution across Asia – the first of its kind emphasizing the specific problems facing each country. In recognition of his tireless efforts on behalf of global public health, Dr. Shin was awarded the Presidential Citation for Environmental Achievement and the Order of National Service Merit, both by the Republic of Korea.
His support of sustainable health care and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals both at his own facilities at Yonsei University, throughout Korea, and across Asia has been integral to the expansion and growth of the network across the region.
