With the help of HCWH and Health Care Foundation Nepal, GGHH member Bir Hospital located in Kathmandu, Nepal is implementing an innovative safe medical waste disposal campaign.

Since 2012, Bir Hospital has been separating hazardous materials from non-hazardous garbage and begun experimenting with new disposal procedures such as vermicomposting, autoclaving and biogas. They are also selling decontaminated waste to make an income and replacing mercury using devices and is a safe injection facility.

According to Ruth Stringer, HCWH’s International Science and Policy Coordinator, “few low-income country hospitals have systems as efficient and effective as Bir’s.”
