South Africa | “Greening Grey’s” Awareness Day
GGHH member and 2020 Challenge participant from South Africa, Grey’s Hospital, organized the “Greening Grey’s” Awareness Day. This event provided staff with the opportunity to learn about the impact of health care facilities like theirs on public health, environmental health, and climate change. In addition, Grey’s Hospital shared information on the initiatives and campaigns the hospital will be rolling out to reduce their carbon footprint as an institution with regards to energy and waste.
The event took place on August 25th, 2016 and was attended by 215 people from the hospital. Presenters spoke about the urgent need for change as the environmental crisis on earth continues to grow. They encouraged the movement towards reducing, recycling and how their actions to lessen their environmental impacts can inspire others in the community to do the same.
“The day brought us, as healthcare providers, much closer to the truth: we really are unintentional contributors of harm to the very people we took an oath to do no harm. The awareness day opened our eyes to the effects of waste that is being generated at the facility is having on the environment, climate and the people of South Africa. We have become so comfortable in our daily routine that we forget the ripple effects our actions have, but this awareness day has opened our eyes and made us see the harm we do.”, Shireen Arends, Quality Assurance Manager at Grey’s Hospital.
