Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust (NGH), GGHH founding member in the United Kingdom, recently received awards recognizing their work and accomplishments in sustainability and environmental footprint reduction. These awards include a High Commendation in the Health Care Supply Association Awards in the sustainability category as well as a Gold award in the Green Apple Awards for the Healthcare Sector.

NGH has government targets to meet in terms of carbon reduction: 10% by 2015 and 34% by 2020. In addition to their carbon reduction efforts, NGH has worked over the last two years to embed wider sustainability principles across the different functions of the Trust. Recognizing that one size doesn’t fit all, they have implemented green initiatives through education and awareness campaigns as well as the recruitment of staff as sustainability champions.  This has resulted in increasing numbers of the hospital’s departments initiating their own sustainability projects. The approach is both bottom up and top down.

By the end of 2015, NGH had reduced their carbon emissions by 1700 tons (11.5%) and for the first 9 month of 2016, they achieved an additional reduction of 800 tons compared to the first 9 months of 2015 (9%).

“In the last twelve months, sustainability at NGH has transformed from turning off lights, fitting LEDs and recycling paper, to site wide requests for assistance in improving sustainability, investigation of new technologies and ownership of sustainability by catering and procurement.  This has been achieved by enabling departments to take small steps towards reducing their environmental impact”, explained Clare Topping, Energy and Sustainability Manager at NGH.

The International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice were presented last November in the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster, London. Established in 1994, the Green Apple Environment Awards is an annual campaign to recognize, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.
